APRIL 9TH & 10TH 2016
First things first. I would like to thank my wife, Mary, for all the hard work she put into the event, the food was awesome!! The event would have been a lot less tasty without her help.
Secondly, I would like to thank all the racers for their help and suport throughout the event . You all helped make the first Sunnyside Speedway race a success and a whole lot of fun. So here is how it all went down.
SNOW!! Are you flipping kidding me? It didn't accumulate too much but it did kill the practice turnout. That did not stop Hiram Durant and Randy Haydt. Their trek through the tundra was rewarded with unlimited track time for four whole hours and a lunch time taste test of Mary's raceday menu. Things wrapped up around five' ish and we shut things down for the day.
Well, Sunday turned out to be a a beautiful spring day which brought a nice turn out to race.
Honorable mention goes out to Dan Wirfel for being the first of the hardcore crew to show up at 7:05 A.M. NICE!! The rest started showing up shortly afterwards.
Everyone settled into their pit spaces and started turning laps and tuning their cars. Shortly after 10:00 am the first race was off starting with the nostalgia class. I figured it would be a good way for everyone to get a good feel for the track since most of the racers have never run the layout before. Randy Haydt took the win with 48 laps followed by DerekSheaffer also with 48 laps. Third place went to Hiram Durant with 47 laps. Fourth place went to Pit Stop also with 47 laps. Honorable mention goes out to Brian Sponagle to round out the top five with 46 laps. We were going to run superstocks next but lunch would have gotten cold by the time we finished, so we ran Indy's instead.
In Indy, George III took the win with 49 laps. Second place went to Hiram Durant with 48 laps. Derek Sheaffer placed third with 47 laps. Fourth place went to Vic Quiones also with 47 laps. Honorable mention goes out to Randy Haydt with 46 laps to round out the top five.
Somewhere around 12:45 pm we stopped for lunch where everyone had a selection of pasta, homemade meatballs and sauce (gravy is for mashed potatoes) baked ham, cakes, brownies, cookies, chips and drinks. Thanks again Mary, everything was delicious.
Time for the SUPER STOCKS. It was a fast paced race. If you had a little bit of horsepower and a smoth trigger finger you were rewarded with some fast lap times and alot of laps. Here are the results. First place goes to Hiram Durant with 87 laps. Henry Belfiore took second with 86 laps. Pit Stop came in at third place also with 86 laps. Fourth place goes to Randy Haydt . Honorable mention goes out to Vic Quiones to round out the top 5. After the race was over ribbons were handed out to the top four finishers in each class. After the awards about half of the racers headed home. Those who chose to stick around pulled out the muscle cars.
After a brief drivers meeting, we all decided to run a ten lap crash and burn to end the day. Here's how it ended up, George III took the win with 14 laps, Henry Belfiore came in second with 13 laps, and third place went to Joe Hoopes also with 13 laps finishing one section behind Henry. Fourth place went to Ed Hoopes with 11 laps, rounding out the top five with 10 laps was Jeff Harker.
I would like to thank everyone again for helping and coming out. I hope everyone had a great time. See you all at Bloomsburg .
