ECHORR Challenge – 2008

The first ECHORR Challenge is officially in the books. It was a great weekend of racing, sharing, and laughing. We started the process on Friday, Henry arriving with most of the tracks in tow, Team KC-Jet arriving from Maryland and all the other racers that helped assemble the tracks and get the hall ready for Saturday’s action. We spent @ 5 hours setting up; then a group of us went over to DCM raceway for some impromptu racing. Thanks to Dave Simms and his shop we got some nice racing action in on Friday night. We slipped in a couple of hours of sleep, then it was back to the hall at 7:30 AM to establish the ground rules for the weekend, tech the classic cars and begin the Individual and IROC events. 52 racers showed up for Day 1 and 60 plus for Day 2.

One of the first orders of business was voting on a track to run the Individual event on, the Blue Max was off limits as it had been designated as the IROC table. Paul Kniffen’s beautiful Max Trak on the orange table was the overwhelming favorite. The race formats were as follows: In the Individual event everyone ran a 2 minute qualifier, marshaled the next race, and then moved to the IROC table for 2 minutes of qualifying there. After marshalling in the IROC event the racers were free to roam the remaining tables not being used to start their team car selection. Staggering the races keeps the event flowing well. After the Individual qualifying event was over the scores were tallied and the top 16 moved on to the ECHORR Sweet 16, where they were broken up into odd and even brackets to narrow it down to the top 8 and finally to the top 4. The final 4 ran a 3 minute A main to decide the Individual Championship. The IROC top 4 qualifiers ran a 3 minute A main to decide the IROC Championship. Below are the summary of the events.

IROC Champion:

Clint Bourne

That concludes Day one of the event. The Individual event and format worked out well with some very close battles deciding the move ups. The IROC race was awesome and very close, It was the first time I had ever seen Clint Bourne sweat during a race, the Kid from DCM Raceway, James T. will be something to be reckoned with in the future….Great job James. The top 3 finishers in the A main were on the same lap. We ran tech for the Team event and then headed out for some dinner and some rest.

Sunday morning came fast and it was time for the Main event, 12 teams ready to rumble for the 1st ECHORR Team Championship. There were some awesome matches as the randomly picked team numbers a and matches evolved throughout the day, after 8 rounds with 3 left there were still 3 undefeated teams. 6 Teams tied for position and we had to use the Head to head tie-breaker to decide the final standings. In the end the team with combined members from KC and Maryland prevailed for the 5th straight year and a 5th straight perfect record in this event. Way to go Team KC-Jet!!

The awards ceremony followed and then the Hall was broken down and everyone left exhausted but happy.
Each Team Captain was given a goody bag filled with prizes from our generous sponsors to be divided amongst their team mates.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, without them these events would not be possible, please support the guys listed above, they have given unconditionally to ECHORR and without them ECHORR will not be able to continue its growth.

Thanks to all that made this a great event and we will look to make it even better in 09 with your help.

I will post pictures as they come in.

Check www.echoorr.com for updates and information on future ECHORR/VHORS events and slot car shows in the area.

One of the biggest highlights on Saturday was the appearance of Bob Beers and Tom Stumpf. Bob brought goody bags for all the teams and Tom made some generous donations as well. Bob had some of his superior merchandize to sell and told stories all day to the guys and was a great resource for Aurora history and just plain shooting the breeze with. Bob was kind enough to donate part of his proceeds to ECHORR for future track endeavors. Bob is a tremendous asset to our hobby and I just want to him a special thank you from ECHORR and all its members.

Bob’s next show is October 19th in Long Island, you can see the details at www.echorr.com , and if you can make this show you will not regret it.

It was great to see a lot of the guys with smiles on their faces, especially Chesney who really seemed to enjoy himself at this event for a change. The KC guys were really impressed how we all banded together and broke down the hall and cleaned it up so quickly after the event. It just shows what good team work can accomplish.

I am looking to expand on our success and with everyone’s help I think we achieve this goal. I am moving the event to a bigger hall where we can have more tracks, more pit space and a designated vendor’s area. Check the website for updates throughout the year.

Thanks again to all that helped make this a great event and thanks to our sponsors who have always treated us right.
