ECHORR – 3rd Anniversary Race Report
WOW, what a gorgeous day to have a race, low 80’s low humidity and plenty of racers pouring in from several states. 41 racers made their way into Thornbury Court Raceway on Saturday, the first day of a 2 day event. Saturday would feature the Junior Racers (13 and under) testing their skills on the Six Pack with IROC cars and a Team event where the Captains were assigned to the teams after the teams were randomly selected. This was a fun and fair way to achieve some parity for the racing that was to take place on 4 different tracks. We started the day off with a light Breakfast, and then gathered everyone into the main race room to do the “Team Draws”, everyone except the pre-determined team captains drew a number from 1 to 8, and this is the team they were assigned to. Then the Captains choose a number from 1 to 8 and named their team.
These were the Teams for the day:
Team 1: Zoomin ( Captain: Paul Kniffen)
Jimmy
Steve B\Joe Hopkins (split the day)
Don A.
Team 2: 1962 ( Captain : Henry Harnish)
Captain Pit Stop (Dennis Moore)

We started the racing off with the Juniors on the Six Pack racing IROC cars, while all the teams set up their cars for the team race on the other tracks. The 13 and under guys put on quite a show, with some close racing and lots of door banging. Danny F. pulled of a repeat of last year and took the top spot; this is a kid to watch in the future! And his little brother Joey is right on his tail…
Junior Results:
Danny F. – 83/6
Joey F. - 76/24
Matt C. - 73/26
Travis – 72/23
Jason – 63/26
Lauren – 60/28
Ryan – 58/10
After the Juniors completed their event we took a short lunch break then it was off to the Team event. We raced on 4 different tracks, two in the basement and two in the garage, so a lot of exercise involved in this event. The Team draws produced quite a bit of parity and close racing. Their were 6 ties throughout the afternoon and two teams tied for the lead and tied against each other head to head, so the event was decided by a tie-breaker. Awesome close racing and this format gave the guys to race with other racers and try other cars and establish new bonds.

** - won the event based on first tie-breaker.
Congratulations to Mike Briggs and His Philly Flyers who tied with Paul Kniffen’s Zoomin team but won the event on a tie – breaker.
Now it was time for some fun!! We went outside to get some refreshments and food, Bar-B-que and Crabs galore, Thanks to Janet!! With the racers, their families, friends and neighbors we had close to 100 people out there for the festivities. The kids enjoyed the Moon Bounce and other outside activities all day, Thanks to Amy Briggs for serving up snow cones all day! Great addition to the event, thanks Mike. Also thanks to big Anthony for serving up some NY style Egg Creams to all that wanted to have some…After everyone settled in we had the plaque presentations for the Juniors and all the Junior racers received goody bags. We handed out the Team Event plaques , then the sponsor prizes were distributed. WOW! As one racer commented, “this is the only event I have been at where it took longer to give out the prizes than most races take to complete”. I handed out prizes for a good hour +.

Everyone just hung around after that, told stories joked and just had a great time. Thanks to Henry Harnish and Mr. Jefferson, the KC guys had a really special time! Just ask Dave “Jefferson” Carter. Some of the racers had to leave and get to other engagements, but most stayed or came back for day 2 for the IROC individual event on the Bowman track.
Sunday turned out to be another gorgeous day, the racers started to show up @ 8:00 AM and the qualifying started @ 10:30 AM. 25 racers showed up to race in the IROC race. The cars were built by Steve Ward and Don Royal from KC, the bodies were donated by Paul Kniffen and they were the new re-vamped Celica…very nice! The cars were set up with Dennis Rutherford wide White slip-ons on JW wheels. They were set up for each lane with a color coded Kniffen Celica. Man are these a hoot to drive. Many racers were asking about this becoming a permanent class in our club. Close racing in every heat with lap times within .1 to .2 seconds. Most move up were decided by 1 lap or less. The race format was as follows: 2 minute qualifying heats, top 3 seeded in the A main, then 2.5 minute mains with unlimited bump ups, then a 3 minute main. Close racing!

Now that is close racing!
We all went back outside for the IROC awards and some food and drink and BSing. It was another truly great racing day.
I want to give special thanks to Henry Harnish for getting the tracks down on Friday, Paul Kniffen, Dave Carter, Don Bourne and Joe Rinn for helping set up on Friday. Mike Briggs for getting the snow cone machine and all the goodies that went with it. Steve Ward and Don Royal for setting up those awesome IROC cars. Janet and Debbie for setting up everything, running to the liquor store and keeping everything managed outside. Joe Rinn for helping me give out the race prizes. Thanks to Don Bourne and Dave “Jefferson” Carter and Nathan Bearden for helping me clean up on Monday before they departed back to KC. I overheard someone say: “How is Hiram going to top this next year?” sounds like a challenge to me!!
See you all at Henry’s Blast.
